Gamification

The process of using game thinking and game mechanics to engage audiences and solve problems.

Epic Meaning & Calling

Epic Meaning & Calling is the First Core Drive of the Gamification Framework Octalysis This is the need urge to be part of something bigger than just learning the task at hand. In games players are often called to action to save the world or perform an action that is bigger than oneself. Taking part in solving real-world problems, voluntary work, school rivalries. This core is activated when the students are inspired and when the product demonstrates deep and sincere passion towards a higher vision. This technique is best used at the start of the project during the on-boarding phase.

Create a story that creates context about why the student should learn this. Center your learning materials around a character. You don’t need to write a novel for this game mechanic, but there does need to be some form of narrative that allows students to connect on an emotional level.

Example:

Every Seppo challenge includes the option to start with a Game story. “A compelling story is an important part of a good game. The story will convey the main message of the game, or it can guide players’ thinking to the way you want to. A good story will allow players to throw themselves into the game. You might want to consider building a rather simple story allowing the main focus to be learning. ” Look at a sample story in the screenshot below.

Elitism instills group pride. It is the idea that when students believe they are part of a group who believes they are better than the rest they will be called to action to uphold this reputation.

Example:

In classcraft teams compete against each other.

Here are some guidelines for creating teams:

  • Choose the teams yourself to encourage better student dynamics.

  • Aim for about 4-5 students per team, if you can.

  • Divide them into teams based on academics, to have a mix of academically strong and weak students.

  • When students choose their characters, make sure they have at least one Warrior, one Mage, and one Healer on their team. This ensures that they’ll have access to all the essential powers in the game.

To use the humanity hero game mechanic, create a narrative which involves a real world mission or solve a real world problem in which the end product will help make the world a better place.

Example:

Solving a real world problem often requires a project management tool. Project pals can be an effective tool to manage your project.
